  33. WHAT IS PLUG-IN FOR WINDOWS?

  37.   Plug-In is an enhancement utility for Windows.  It seamlessly integrates
  38.   with Windows and works with any Windows Desktop.  Plug-In feels like a
  39.   natural extension of Windows...

  92. WHAT IS NEW IN PLUG-IN FOR WINDOWS, VERSION 2?
  93.  
  94.   Lots!  In fact, there is so much new functionality that it could be
  95.   considered a new product.  Please see the above list of features and
  96.   be sure to look in our on-line help for full details on how to use
  97.   the new capabilities!

  100. INSTALLATION NOTES & SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  101.  
  102.   Plug-In works with all flavors of Windows 3.1, including Windows 3.1, 
  103.   Windows 3.11, Windows for Workgroups 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11.
  104.   Plug-In is designed to be an integral part of Windows and is thus 
  105.   always "running" ... however, it uses your memory and processor 
  106.   sparingly!  The Plug-In package includes a number of sound files.  If
  107.   you do not intend to use these, you may delete *.WAV from your Plug-In
  108.   home directory to free-up some disk space.  If you also have the
  109.   talking clock files, but do not need them, you may delete *.SAY and
  110.   *.DAT from your Plug-In home directory.
  111.  
  112.   Plug-In takes between 0.5 and 1.5 MB of disk space (depending on
  113.   whether or not you are using the sound files).  It uses between
  114.   2% to 3% of system resources when it is running.
  115.  
  116.   Once you have unarchived (or copied) all of Plug-In's files to a
  117.   directory on your hard disk (e.g., C:\PLUGIN), run PLUGIN.EXE from 
  118.   Windows.  Plug-In has a built-in install program which will setup
  119.   its data files in a subdirectory of your Plug-In home directory.
  120.  
  121.   If you are updating an existing version of Plug-In, see the next
  122.   section.

  125. INSTALLING OVER A PREVIOUS VERSION OF PLUG-IN
  126.  
  127.   NOTE!: If you are installing from Plug-In's master diskette (which
  128.          you receive when you purchase Plug-In), simply run INSTALL.EXE
  129.          from the diskette (Hint:  Use Plug-In's Install Application
  130.          feature!).  
  131.          
  132.          If you are installing by using the "freely distributable" software,
  133.          please read these notes:
  134.  
  135.   1) If you already have a version of Plug-In running on your system, you
  136.      must first shut it down before running the new version of Plug-In V2!
  137.  
  138.      For Plug-In 1.x, select "Options | Configure Plug-In | Remove" from
  139.                       Program Manager's menus
  140.  
  141.      For Plug-In 2.x, select "Shutdown Plug-In" from the Plug-In 
  142.                       Control Center dialog (double-click on the 
  143.                       Power Button, or select Options | Configure Plug-In 
  144.                       from the QuickRun menu.
  145.  
  146.  
  147.   2) UnArchive Plug-In V2.  You can overwrite the existing Plug-In
  148.      files if you wish.  
  149.  
  150.   3) Run PLUGIN.EXE from the Plug-In V2 home directory, and you are on
  151.      your way.
  152.  
  153.  
  154. SPECIAL NOTES FOR USERS OF PLUG-IN V2.00 - V2.20
  155.  
  156.   This release contains a large number of changes from previous
  157.   versions of Plug-In V2 (Versions 2.00 thru 2.20).  Following
  158.   are some notes to help you with the update process:
  159.  
  160.   - Plug-In V2.50 uses a different technique for updating the title
  161.     bar displays.  While this new method is much "safer" than the
  162.     previous one, you may notice an occasional flicker or even a
  163.     short period where the title bar displays are removed while
  164.     using certain applications.  This is due to a delay between when
  165.     an application repaints its title bar and when it gives up
  166.     control of the processor so that Plug-In can do its work.  In
  167.     normal operation, you won't even notice any difference.
  168.  
  169.   - Plug-In now stores its data files in a separate directory.  When
  170.     you first run the new version of Plug-In, it will create this
  171.     directory and move your data files from the Plug-In directory to
  172.     the data directory.  This new directory is called PLUGDATA and
  173.     will be located in your Plug-In home directory.  However, if you
  174.     are running Plug-In from a network drive, it will create the
  175.     PLUGDATA directory in your Windows directory.  This whole process
  176.     is completed automatically and does not require any action on your
  177.     part.  One of the benefits of this new data directory is that
  178.     you can easily backup your Plug-In data files and it also results
  179.     in less clutter in your Windows directory (which is already crowded
  180.     with lots of files).
  181.  
  182.   - The sound playback mode will be changed to "Asynchronous" when
  183.     you update to V2.5.  This was done to avoid a problem with some
  184.     sound drivers where sound apps would report "sound device in use"
  185.     when they started.  However, you may find that you enjoy the
  186.     "feel" of synchronous playback mode better.  Please feel free
  187.     to change it back to synchronous by using the Sound Options dialog.
  188.  
  189.   - We now have an "Exclude" dialog, which will allow you to easily
  190.     exclude the title bar dislays and/or event sounds from any
  191.     application you desire.
  192.  
  193.   - For more details on changes in Plug-In V2.5, please see the
  194.     "Change History" at the end of this file.
  195.  
  196.  
  197. MOVING YOUR PLUG-IN DATA DIRECTORY
  198.  
  199.   There are a couple of simple considerations if you wish to relocate
  200.   your Plug-In data directory.
  201.  
  202.   1) You can copy all the files to another directory.  We recommend
  203.      that whatever directory you choose is a separate directory used
  204.      only for storing Plug-In's data files.  By default, this directory
  205.      is called PLUGDATA and is located in your Plug-In home directory.
  206.  
  207.      PLEASE do not move your Plug-In data directory while Plug-In
  208.      is running!  You could lose valuable data!
  209.  
  210.   2) If you simply run Plug-In from a different location (for example,
  211.      if you are updating to a new version and installed in a different
  212.      directory), Plug-In will offer to move the data files for you.
  213.      
  214.   3) If you move the data files manually, there are a couple of ways you
  215.      can inform Plug-In about the move:
  216.   
  217.      a) Edit WIN.INI, and look for a section called [Plannet].  Replace
  218.         the "Plug-In=" entry with the new path, save the file, and
  219.         restart Windows
  220.  
  221.      b) If you move the PLUGDATA directory from your old Plug-In home 
  222.         directory to your new home directory, Plug-In will automatically
  223.         detect the change if the old directory is renamed or removed.
  224.  
  225.  
  226. NOTES FOR INTERNATIONAL USERS
  227.  
  228.   Plug-In has fairly complete support for many international countries.  
  229.   We support international date/time formats and even the Talking Clock 
  230.   feature has the ability to use 24 hour format.
  231.  
  232.   New in this version of Plug-In is an "International Settings" dialog
  233.   (accessed from the General Options dialog in Plug-In's Control Center).
  234.   This dialog allows you to modify a number of important text strings
  235.   used by Plug-In.  This gives it a much more "integrated" feel when
  236.   you use Plug-In with an international version of Windows.
  237.  
  238.  
  239. CONFLICTS WITH OTHER UTILITIES
  240.  
  241.   There are several programs on the market (both commercial and
  242.   shareware) that offer some overlapping functionality with Plug-In.
  243.   While most of these programs do not cause serious conflicts, you
  244.   might see some unexpected behavior.  For example, if you are
  245.   using another utility that displays information on active title
  246.   bars, you will see both applications fighting to paint on the
  247.   title bar.  Another example is utilities that assign sounds to
  248.   system events.  
  249.  
  250.   Please note that almost everything in Plug-In is configurable.
  251.   If there is a feature you don't desire, check the Control Center.
  252.   Chances are you can disable it or modify the settings to your liking.
  253.  
  254.   If you find that Plug-In's Power Button is not functioning, it is 
  255.   most likely caused by another utility which intercepts and (improperly)
  256.   devours mouse messages.  The solution is to ensure that Plug-In starts 
  257.   *after* the utility that is causing the problem.  The easiest thing to 
  258.   do is place Plug-In as the last item in the LOAD= line in your WIN.INI 
  259.   file, or place it in your StartUp group.  Please see the on-line help 
  260.   for further details.
  261.  
  262.   We are currently aware of a few utilities that have problems when
  263.   Plug-In is running:
  264.  
  265.   1) Icon Hear-It and Icon Do-It.  If these programs are loaded prior
  266.      to Plug-In AND you have icon movies assigned to group icons, the
  267.      group icons with the movies will appear as black squares.  The 
  268.      solution is to have Plug-In load prior to these utilities.  Please
  269.      note that due to the way Plug-In initializes, this workaround is
  270.      only possible in the registered version of Plug-In.
  271.  
  272.   2) Wired for Sound Pro.  This program can cause a GP Fault in Program
  273.      Manager if Plug-In is running.  While this problem is not due to a
  274.      bug in Plug-In, we have devised a workaround for those who wish to
  275.      continue using Wired for Sound.  You need to add "WFS=1" to the
  276.      [Settings] section of PLUGIN.INI (in your Plug-In data directory).
  277.      Before using this fix, please take a look in the "INI-Switches"
  278.      subsection of "Tips & Techniques" in the Plug-In help file.  
  279.  
  280.   3) AnyView Pro (Binar Graphics).  This utility has a problem with any
  281.      application that modifies menus in another app.  This is due to
  282.      its "OptiMemm" feature, which by default is set to "high".  To
  283.      use AnyView and Plug-In at the same time, all you need to do is
  284.      set the OptiMemm feature in AnyView to "LOW".
  285.  
  286.   4) Lotus Notes.  Depending on your configuration, the QuickRun menu
  287.      accessed from the Power Button in the Lotus Notes title bar will
  288.      not do anything if you select a menu item.  We are looking into
  289.      this and hope to have a fix shortly.
  290.  
  291.  
  292. EXCLUDING APPS FROM PLUG-IN'S TITLE BAR DISPLAYS AND EVENT SOUNDS
  293.  
  294.   New in this version of Plug-In is an "Exclude" dialog, which allows
  295.   you to easily exclude Plug-In's title bar displays and/or event sounds
  296.   from any applications you desire.  This gives you total control over
  297.   how Plug-In interacts with your programs.
  298.  
  299.   The list of default excludes includes:
  300.  
  301.       ChessMaster 4000 (title bar and sounds)
  302.       Myst (title bar and sounds)
  303.       SideKick for Windows (title bar)
  304.       WordPerfect for Windows (title bar)
  305.       Ami Pro for Windows (title bar)
  306.       Lotus 123 for Windows (title bar)
  307.       InterNetworks (title bar)
  308.  
  309.   You can, of course, change any of these defaults to suit your wishes.
  310.   For example, it is possible in SideKick to disable its use of the
  311.   title bar, in which case you may want to re-enable Plug-In's title bar
  312.   displays for SideKick.

  317. UPDATE ISSUES FOR OWNERS OF PLUG-IN 1.X
  318.  
  319.   The registration scheme has changed in Plug-In V2.  As a
  320.   current owner of Plug-In 1.x, you are entitled to a complimentary 
  321.   Plug-In V2 registration.
  322.  
  323.   If you wish to order the update diskette, your new registration
  324.   info will come with the package.  Please see the next section,
  325.   "Ordering the Update Diskette..." for full details.
  326.  
  327.   If you want your new registration info, but do not desire the
  328.   update diskette, please send us mail, fax, or e-mail (no phone
  329.   calls, please).  Include your name, address, and phone;  and 
  330.   specify that you are a registered user and want the new
  331.   registration info.  We will mail your registration info to
  332.   you.

  335. ORDERING THE UPDATE DISKETTE IF YOU CURRENTLY OWN PLUG-IN 1.x

  337.   If you currently own Plug-In 1.x, you can obtain the released
  338.   version on diskette.  This diskette contains lots of new icons,
  339.   cursors and sound files (including the Plug-In Talking Clock).

  366. WHERE CAN I OBTAIN THE TALKING CLOCK FILES?
  367.  
  368.   Due to size constraints, the Talking Clock files are packages in a
  369.   separate archive.  The filename is PITALK2?.ZIP, where "?" is the 
  370.   current revision level of Plug-In.  So, if you obtained PLUG251.ZIP,
  371.   look for PITALK25.ZIP.  The size of this file is approximately 300K.
  372.  
  373.   If you can't find this archive locally, you can always obtain it from 
  374.   the Plannet Crafters BBS or via the Plannet Crafters FTP Site (see below).
  375.   Of course, when you purchase the product, we ship you a master diskette
  376.   which contains the Talking Clock files, plus lots of other goodies.

  378.   Once you obtain the Talking Clock files, place the contents in the same
  379.   directory as Plug-In.  Note that the Talking Clock feature requires a
  380.   sound card or a special PC speaker driver.  This special speaker driver
  381.   is available from our BBS and FTP site.  The filename is PISPEAK.ZIP

  383.   Note:  If you have already obtained the talking clock files from a 
  384.   previous version of Plug-In V2, please be aware that we have updated
  385.   the female voice in Version 2.5.

  387.   Note2:  We now have a few additional variations on the Talking Clock
  388.   voices (echo effects, etc.).  You can download these files from our
  389.   BBS or FTP download site.  We plan to have a number of other voices
  390.   available in the not-too-distant future.

  439. PLUG-IN AND WINDOWS 95 (AKA CHICAGO and WINDOWS 4.0)
  440.  
  441.   You might be aware that the next version of Windows (Windows 95)
  442.   is currently under development by Microsoft.  This is a major new 
  443.   release of the Windows environment, which contains many changes.  
  444.   Plug-In will remain a valuable addition to your system when you upgrade
  445.   to Win 95.  However, the current version of Plug-In is only designed to
  446.   operate under Windows 3.x.  We are working on a major update to Plug-In
  447.   that will take advantage of the new features offered by Win 95, and hope
  448.   to have it available when Win 95 is released.  Please contact Plannet
  449.   Crafters for further details.

  451.   Also, please note that we are interested in creating a version of Plug-In
  452.   to work in conjunction with Windows NT, but that will probably come after
  453.   we release the Win 95 version...
  454.

  456. HOW TO USE THE RESTRICTIONS SETTINGS
  457.  
  458.   Plug-In now supports a set of restriction settings as an aid to system
  459.   administrators.  These settings can be used to prohibit the modification
  460.   of most of Plug-In's features.  To use this feature, simply create a
  461.   file called RESTRICT.INI in the Plug-In home directory.  It is recommended
  462.   that this file be made read-only so that end-users cannot modify it.
  463.  
  464.   The format of the RESTRICT.INI file is:
  465.  
  466.      [Restrictions]
  467.      GE=1
  468.      PM=1
  469.      CC=1
  470.      RA=1
  471.      QR=1
  472.      TB=1
  473.      AS=1
  474.      SO=1
  475.  
  476.   Each of these settings can be set to "1" (restricted) or 
  477.   "0" (not restricted).  Note that the default for each entry 
  478.   is "not restricted".
  479.  
  480.   "GE" disables the General Options dialog
  481.   "PM" disables the Program Manager Options dialog
  482.   "CC" disables the Custom Cursors dialog
  483.   "RA" disables the Resource Alerts dialog 
  484.   "QR" disables the QuickRun Config dialog
  485.   "TB" disables the Title Bar Config dialog
  486.   "AS" disables the Alarms & Scheduler dialog
  487.   "SO" disables the Sounds Config dialog
  488.  
  489.   Please note that the purpose of these settings is to disallow end-user
  490.   modifications of configuration data.  However, the individual features
  491.   are not disabled (unless, of course, you disable specific features
  492.   prior to enabling the restrictions settings).  
  493.  
  494.   If you have further questions about the use of the restrictions settings
  495.   and/or questions about using Plug-In in a networked environment, please
  496.   feel free to call us!

  499. HOW TO DE-INSTALL PLUG-IN
  500.  
  501.   If you wish to de-install Plug-In from a system, do the following:
  502.  
  503.         1) If you have used Plug-In's nested groups (with Program Manager),
  504.            you should first un-nest all nested groups by dragging them to
  505.            Program Manager's desktop.
  506.  
  507.         2) Disable "Run Plug-In when Windows starts" in the "General
  508.            Config" dialog and press the OK button.  (If you fail to do 
  509.            this, you must manually remove the Plug-In entry from either 
  510.            the StartUp group or the "Load=" line in the WIN.INI file.)  
  511.  
  512.         3) Shutdown Plug-In by selecting "Shutdown Plug-In" in the 
  513.            Plug-In Control Center dialog.
  514.  
  515.         4) In the Windows directory, delete the following files:
  516.            GROUP.EXE and PLUGIN.* (may not exist)
  517.  
  518.         5) Delete all files in Plug-In's home directory (assuming
  519.            this directory contains ONLY Plug-In files!).  Also,
  520.            be sure to delete any files in the Plug-In data directory
  521.            (default is PLUGDATA under your Plug-In home directory).

  641.    - Restrictions section added.  System Administrators can prevent users from
  642.      modifying the QuickRun menu, Resource Alerts, and Sounds Settings, Etc.

  646.    - Plug-In now has the ability to function as the Windows Shell (i.e.,
  647.      replace Program Manager or other third-party shells).  This feature 
  648.      will appeal to you if you if you like to have the ultimate in 
  649.      uncluttered desktops.  It also is great if you like to run large 
  650.      desktops (i.e., memory and resource hogs), because you can easily 
  651.      unload the desktop if you temporarilly need the extra memory and/or 
  652.      resources.

  654.    - In conjunction with allowing Plug-In to function as a shell, we now 
  655.      allow Program Manager to be run at any time and still have all the 
  656.      added Plug-In functionality.  So, if you use Plug-In as your shell, 
  657.      you can run Program Manager as you need it, and shut it down when 
  658.      you don't.

  660.    - Plug-In now supports a separate data directory, instead of forcing its
  661.      data files to be located in the Windows directory.  In addition to 
  662.      making it easier to manage these files, this also allows you to easily
  663.      backup your valuable Plug-In data.  Note:  The default location for 
  664.      this directory is PLUGDATA in your Plug-In home directory (it will be 
  665.      in the Windows directory if you are running Plug-In from a network 
  666.      drive).

  668.    - New Talking Clock voice for the default (female) voice.  We've also
  669.      released an additional collection of talking clock voices for your
  670.      enjoyment.

  672.    Bug Fixes
  673.    ---------

  675.    - Talking Clock, Chimes, and long sounds wouldn't work in certain countries
  676.      (e.g., France, Netherlands).

  678.    - Talking Clock would display an error message if the sound device was in
  679.      use.   This was annoying under certain conditions (such as when a screen
  680.      saver with sound support is active).

  682.    - Pentium processors would be displayed as 80486's in the System Info
  683.      dialog

  685.    - Chimes at midnight would chime only once instead of 12 times.

  687.    - System Resource Alerts could occur too often if the percent of free

  699.    - Items entered into the Run history list were lowercased, which caused
  700.      problems with some commands which are case sensitive.

  702.    - 'Control + Alt + Spacebar' had been used to activate the QuickRun menu
  703.      in an app (similar to using 'Alt + Spacebar' to activate the system 
  704.      menu in an app).  However, this caused problems with macro recorders, 
  705.      so it is no longer a feature.

  707.    - Under certain circumstances, running a program using dynamic Program
  708.      Manager groups in the QuickRun menu would result in the working 
  709.      directory being improperly set.
  710.  
  711.    - If there is an error playing an hourly chime, we will disable the 
  712.      chime.  This is to help prevent repeating error messages.
  713.  
  714.    - Plug-In's title bar displays were sometimes incorrect on apps that 
  715.      allow the title bar to be dynamically disabled.
  716.  
  717.    - Plug-In wouldn't show up on certain app's main windows (such as Eudora
  718.      and Netscape)
  719.  
  720.    - The title bar displays on dialog boxes with unusual border styles would
  721.      be off by a pixel or two.
  722.  
  723.    - The vertical positioning of the title bar display could be off if only
  724.      the right-hand side of the display was active.
  725.  
  726.    - If you setup a minimized QuickDOS app from the QuickRun menu, it failed
  727.      to execute in the background.

  729.    - The 'Prompt for Parameters' dialog (QuickRun) failed to supress the
  730.      display of ampersands in its title.

  732.    - If Plug-In is run a second time, it brings up the Control Center, 
  733.      which is handy.  However, some users would end up with Plug-In 
  734.      specified in the LOAD= line in WIN.INi *and* their StartUp group, 
  735.      which would cause the Control Center to come up as soon as they 
  736.      started Windows.  We now do not bring up the Control Center if 
  737.      Plug-In is run a second time within the first 60 seconds after 
  738.      Windows is started.
  739.  
  740.    - The Program Manager iconic display of memory / system resources didn't
  741.      look right if the user had less than 10MB of memory (including swap 
  742.      file memory).
  743.  
  744.    - Right-Click menus of group items in Program Manager were not sorted
  745.      properly.
  746.  
  747.    - The Capture dialog now sets the window to default if the chosen
  748.      application is minimized.
  749.  
  750.    - Certain date formats didn't display properly
  751.  
  752.    - Added a workaround for a problem that occurred if Plug-In and 
  753.      Wired for Sound were running at the same time.  The workaround is 
  754.      described in the "Conflicts with Other Utilities" section earlier
  755.      in this README file.

  757.    - Alarms and Chimes have an option to operate between certain hours, 
  758.      but it didn't work if the hours crossed through midnight.  In other 
  759.      words, 'between 6PM and 9AM' now works.

  762.      <default> alarm sound was set to <none>.

  764.    - Some dialogs would allow OK to be pressed even if all the needed info

  792.      but it wasn't obvious so we decided to do a quick fix.

  809.      occasionally produce "slipstream" releases, it has to do with
  810.      creating a balance between quickly solving problems in Plug-In
  811.      and preventing users from needlessly downloading updates they
  812.      don't need.  If we increased the version number every time we
  813.      did even a very minor release, lots of users would download the
  814.      new version just to have the "latest-and-greatest" version of 
  815.      Plug-In.  Since downloading software has some cost associated
  816.      (for most users), we have decided to do "slipstream" releases
  817.      when we feel the problems solved are very minor and/or rare.
  818.  
  819.      If the staff at Plannet Crafters tells you that something has 
  820.      been fixed in a "slipstream" release, you can always guarantee 
  821.      that you will get the latest version of Plug-In by downloading 
  822.      it from the Plannet Crafters BBS or the Plannet Crafters FTP 
  823.      Download Site.

  825.      In this release, we fixed two very rare problems:  
  826.      
  827.      a) Fixed a problem where an app would appear to hang with a 
  828.         flickering menu bar when doing certain operations.  Prior to 
  829.         this version, the workaround was to exclude the title bar 
  830.         displays from the problem app.
  831.  
  832.      b) Fixed a problem that could prevent the Power Button from 
  833.         displaying the QuickRun menu.  This was caused by other 
  834.         utilities that also capture mouse events, but failed to 
  835.         properly pass these events on to other utilities.  Prior 
  836.         to this version, the workaround was to ensure that Plug-In 
  837.         was the last utility to load when Windows started.
  838.  
  839. Version 2.52 (May 15, 1995)

  841.    - If you assigned a large wave file as a Plug-In Start sound,
  842.      the start sound would play, but other event sounds would be
  843.      disabled.
